Federal report reveals troubling statistic

A new report issued by the United States Department of Agriculture revealed that nearly 50 million people were food insecure last year.

This is the highest figure reported since the federal government began to record levels of food insecurity in America.

According to the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, food insecurity is the condition in which one does not have constant physical and economic access to the food necessary for survival. Worldwide, approximately two billion suffer from this social issue.

President Obama characterized the report as "unsettling."
